As indicated in the '7.8 official release plans'
thread there seems to be some interest for an official community release
of LMS 7.8.0. To be able to achieve this, we all need to spend some time
testing the latest 7.8.0 beta version.

The latest 7.8.0 beta can as always be found here:
http://downloads.slimdevices.com/nightly/?ver=7.8

For people who aren't sure which areas to focus testing on, here is the
changes between 7.7.x and 7.8.0 beta version:
http://htmlpreview.github.io/?https://github.com/Logitech/slimserver/blob/public/7.8/Changelog7.html

And a description on what they mean are available in the following
post:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?100759-7-8-official-release-plans&p=769683&viewfull=1#post769683

To get a feeling if people really run tests on the LMS 7.8 beta version,
I would suggest that people try to post their test results in this
thread.

Basically if someone has run some tests post some brief information
about which areas you have tested and if it worked or if you found some
critical bugs. If you find some critical bug register it at
http://bugs.slimdevices.com and post a link to the registered bug in
this thread so the rest of us know that it has already been registered
and can confirm if we also see the same problem or not. We know there
are are a lot of minor bugs in the system, so let's focus the effort on
finding critical ones which you feel have to be fixed to be able to
release 7.8.0 as an official community release.

When you register a new bug make sure to select:
- Product: Logitech Media Server
- Version: 7.8.0
This way it's easy for the community developers to find it.

All registered open bugs on Logitech Media Server product during 2014
can be found using the following query:
http://bugs.slimdevices.com/buglist.cgi?f1=creation_ts&order=Bug%20Number&list_id=52689&columnlist=bug_severity%2Cpriority%2Cop_sys%2Cassigned_to%2Cbug_status%2Cresolution%2Ctarget_milestone%2Cshort_desc&o1=greaterthan&query_format=advanced&bug_status=UNCONFIRMED&bug_status=NEW&bug_status=ASSIGNED&bug_status=REOPENED&v1=2013-12-31&product=Logitech%20Media%20Server

If you try to re-produce a specific bug someone else have found and
can't reproduce it, it's probably a good idea to add a comment in the
bug report saying that you weren't able to reproduce it. If you are able
to reproduce an existing bug, click the "vote" link on the bug report
and it will be an indication to the community developers that it's
something multiple people can confirm.

The complete list of bugs which have currently been reported for version
7.8.0 is the following:
http://bugs.slimdevices.com/buglist.cgi?order=Bug%20Number&columnlist=bug_severity%2Cpriority%2Cop_sys%2Cassigned_to%2Cbug_status%2Cresolution%2Ctarget_milestone%2Cshort_desc&query_format=advanced&bug_status=UNCONFIRMED&bug_status=NEW&bug_status=ASSIGNED&bug_status=REOPENED&version=7.8.0&product=Logitech%20Media%20Server

The list of open bugs in 7.7.x is the following:
http://bugs.slimdevices.com/buglist.cgi?query_format=advanced&order=Bug%20Number&bug_status=UNCONFIRMED&bug_status=NEW&bug_status=ASSIGNED&bug_status=REOPENED&version=7.7.0&version=7.7.1&version=7.7.2&version=7.7.3&version=7.7.4&columnlist=bug_severity%2Cpriority%2Cop_sys%2Cassigned_to%2Cbug_status%2Cresolution%2Ctarget_milestone%2Cshort_desc&product=Logitech%20Media%20Server

For people not reading the other thread, please keep in mind that this
is a community effort and not an official Logitech effort, so let's try
to keep a positive climate and avoid complaining on people who are
willing to contribute either as testers or developers.

Thanks a lot Erland!

It's probably a bit odd if I report what I've been testing, as it'll
obviously be the stuff I've been working on :-).

But somebody has to start. I guess one part which I've been working on a
lot is the new LMS own image proxy. Most of my plugins (in particular
the Music and Artist Info plugin) make heavy use of it. The TuneIn
artwork is using it by default as well. I decided to do this to give it
some real world testing by all users. Thus I'd say it's working pretty well.

Another area is the new & changed artwork scan. I'm currently going
through my artwork (I still have album covers < 150px)...

Please don't forget to CC michael ät slimdevices dott com on your bug
reports. That way I'll get copied.

I'd like to add regressions. These might be minor issues, but we
shouldn't break things that worked in 7.7.

Is there anything in particular that you'd like to have tested?

Now I can obviously change my parsing routing to accomodate the diffrent
order that the tags are recieved but tags are often duplicated type:
followed by another type: and I've seen the same with other tags so
something is screwed up in this version. I doubt this is caused by my
code that breaks up the returned string into the individual tag:value
elements for my parsing array.

What about 7.7.3?

TBH: I wouldn't use the CLI for any serious work any more. Move to using
json/rpc instead. The CLI is broken in many ways. In so many ways,
trying to fix this one issue wouldn't really help. json/rpc does return
well structured data which goes way beyond the very limited
possibilities of the raw CLI.

What programming language are you using on the client side?

Sorry for such a late response but I caught a bug (flu type) and didn't
feel like checking in.

I telnet-ed directly into a PC running 7.8 and everything seems fine
just as you posted but when I telnet into my vortexbox running 7.8 from
my PC I get the same odd behavior. This means my AMX gear or my code
isn't at fault so me now thinks it's something in either the latest VB
2.3 beta build or maybe my old VB has insufficient memory for the
current VB build. I'll investigate further on the other side. Thx.

I've tried a few different players and albums with latest Windows build
(7.8.0 - 1391769631) and found that I can no longer seek to the middle
of a FLAC track. When I click within the webGUI progress bar, the track
just starts over. Can anyone confirm? Thanks.

Just in case it's useful, I use 7.8 every day with good results. While I
haven't specifically been validating against bugs.slimdevices.com, I
make heavy use of the following plugins: CustomBrowse, CustomScan, SQL
Playlists, Dynamic Playlists, Music & Artist Information, Multi Library,
Database Query, YouTube, and Trackstat. I install from the readyNas x86
package.

I am pleased to say everything has run smoothly, and I have not noticed
anything that is not production-ready.

There have been almost two weeks without any bug report or other serious
issue reported. Shall we just go ahead and call the latest code 7.8.0?
This is the last call...

Hi,

i am completly happy with 7.8.0 - 1384348383 *but* i am not using any
Webbased Music like napster or something.

I'll think the best way for a "new" Version number should be a newer
perl Version cause of the next Debians (now only the testing and beta -
but the day will come) they would use 5.18.

What did you think?

Just put the old perl 5.14 into the LMS installer and use that Version
or implement the 5.18?

cheers

There already is (limited) support for 5.18. And we can't pair a new LMS
version with one perl version, as LMS needs to run on several different
platforms with different perl versions.

Or maybe I just don't understand what you're trying to say.

I mentioned this in a different 7.8 thread, but no one else seemed to
have the same problem:

My current LMS is a Pi running raspian. When I switched to 7.8
nightlies, I started seeing constant rebuffering when playing AAC
streams via tunein. I haven't had time to investigate other than to try
switching to the allthingspi copy of faad, which solved the problem. I
don't know what's different about their faad, but it is much smaller.

make the >5.18 perl support really solid both 64 bit and 32 bit .

Do LMS come with both 32 and 64 bit binaries yet ? Flac/faad/sox etc ?
So that no one has to install 32bit combatibily packs ,typically for
Ubuntu and Debian ?

It would be weird if the perl stuff is for 64 bit and the binaries are
really 32 bit ?

No new bugs in the latest weeks , but there are some unresolved old ones
, swat some of those .

Make sure all supported online services actually work ? Live Music
Archive for example , it's one of those very seldom used plugins in my
case ,so it's usually broken when I try . What's the current status ?

And thanks for the effort :)

Must say it works really good for me

Sounds like a great plan - post 7.8.0. The idea is to have a 7.8.0 based on today's code out soon. Only bug-fixes, no more features. Adding all those binaries will require a lot of work. Too much to not turn 7.8.0 into eternal beta mode again.

That's not a 7.8 issue, but a mysb.com problem. IIRC the cron job we had in place to update the data doesn't work any more. I don't remember the details, but it's some massive XML file import which fails at some point.

If it's bugging me, I fix it :-).

I usually try to understand what issue is faced by how many users. Or if
it's really a trivial change.

Unfortunately there are issues seen and reported very often, and I still
haven't any clue about how to fix it (eg. name resolutions issues).

There has been some exchange. Eg. some of the perl 5.18 specific
changes, or inclusion of the loc protocol handler needed for hires playback.

I still feel there's no big lingering problem. I'll prepare the build
host for this particular .0 release. Development won't stop here.

Optimized assembler code somewhere or something?

Maybe it's linked against shared libraries instead of statically or
something?

One of the plugin users of my plugins found an issue. Apparently
musicbrainz tags aren't scanned for WMA music:
http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=18076

This isn't really new in 7.8, but it would still be great if it would be
possible to include it in the 7.8 release since I believe the correctly
should be pretty isolated and just a change in Slim/Formats/WMA.pm

When looking at this, it might be worth to also do the correction for
musicbrainz tags and m4a files:
http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=18000

I can try to provide a tested patch within the next couple of days if
that would help to get it included.

Thanks, I've verified the correction and it seems to work.

While testing it I noticed a more general problem related to musicbrainz
tags on album artists, I've registered a bug and attached a patch to it
which solves the problem:
http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=18077
It's not that important since I don't think musicbrainz tags for
contributors are used for anything inside LMS, but I thought I'd at
least register it and leave it up to you if you want to commit it in
7.8.0 or not.

Also installed but on Ubuntu 10.04. I'm not sure if there's been any
changes since the recentish nightly I've been running so I don't expect
to get any issues but I'll report if I do.

A question though is an upgrade on Ubuntu using dpkg likely to behave
any differently to a fresh install? Bear in mind I'm a windows user so
I'm quite used to upgrades to sometimes be a problem. I've updated from
7.7.3 through various nightly 7.8 and finally to the RC.

I'm not sure about the dpkg specifics. But I'd assume it would just run
the update and continue where you left - with the updated code. Prefs
should be used as before, even the cache (depending on what version you
came from). I often switch between 7.8 and 7.7 when developing, and this
usually works perfectly fine, without new scan etc.

Oh I know it works as it's what I've been doing, probably about 7 or 8
times what with upgrading to 7.8 and then upgrading it various nightlies
and the RC.

My question was more relating to if I do get any issues or bugs would
they be valid or is it possible that the upgrade might contribute to the
issues?

Which firmware is going to be used with the community release of LMS ?

specifically) be based on the same version 7.8 as LMS community release
?

The firmware is 7.8, has support for the "defeat destructive..."
feature. TinySC still is 7.7 though.

well, I finally got around to this. its good news and bad news.

I am running the Mar 21 7.8 release on win7 64, and I can at least get
things working, that's the good news.

but I am having a problem I have had for years. the question is does it
affect all, some, or only me?

the problem is that in order for my duet to connect to my server, I have
to go into the windows firewall and manually turn off half of it,
specifically the "private network" (as opposed to the public network
part) of the firewall.

I need someone to tell me what exceptions should be in my firewall for
the server, or whatever, b/c I do see some, but they aren't working. I
can enable/disable the private network firewall and see the duet
lost/regain the connection to the server. it seems to me I shouldn't
have to disable any of the firewall to make things work.

any ideas?

Just wondering ... Is there some point at which "Logitech" should be
removed from the name of the community server? Or would they prefer it
remain, as long as you're working on it on company time? I hate to think
about yet another name for the server and the confusion it might cause,
but then again I never liked the current one. Going back to
SqueezeCenter or Squeezebox Server might be nice.

told to do so. As you said: those name changes are a major pita. In

Please keep this discussion to the other thread you opened. As this is
not a 7.8 bug, but a longstanding issue, it doesn't belong here. Thanks!

Hehe... good question. Not that it would change anything for most users anyway. But I hoped to do it this week. Got distracted with more urgent stuff. Will look into this asap.

As this will NOT be an official release, anybody got an idea how to best distribute it? I'll add a note to my sticky about nightlies, and can edit some wiki page. Anybody got a better idea?

This is the last call. Bring up your issues. Or you'll have to wait for a 7.8.1 nightly build :-)

Installing it now.

I still have a folder on my PC called "SlimServer", which is the default
download location for these files.

And you're still downloading from a slimdevices.com server :-)

I'm not sure whether I've ever run an official release, but I just
installed today's 7.8.0. I'm surprised that there's no indication
anywhere that it's a release and not just one of the many beta
revisions.

I added binaries for Perl 5.18 on i386 Linux. But for those who were
running 7.8 before it should be identical.

The git history does list more changes, but they resulted from my
back-porting select 7.8 changes to 7.7, then merging 7.7 to 7.8 again to
synch up. But that merge was an empty merge, as all changes were already
in place.

I attached my firewall settings (some are for SAMBA) but I think
unblocking these ports:

- TCP 9000, 9090, 3483
- UDP 3483
- is recommended

ok, so I am now running the unofficially official 7.8 community
release.

my SBR firmware = 77
my SBC seems to be 7.7.2 r9863 or something like that.

what firmware vers should my SBR/SBC (duet) be at?

is it the jive thing in the link? how do I update it?

thx.

I can confirm that after I turned on updates in 7.8 server, I finally
got the SBC to update itself/jive as well, but I had to manually request
the update on the SBC and it offered me an either or choice of 7.8 or
7.7.2

But glad it's working now, thx!

One more part which should be tested thoroughly: m3u playlist scanning.
Please test this with lists containing both local and remote
tracks/URLs. Thanks!
